Pushing glass beyond the anatomy of the vessel, Ethan Stern's work is an ongoing exploration of abstraction, color, texture and light. While glass generally reflects light and has an inherently shiny, dense appearance, it is drawn to a richer, brighter effect that can be achieved by sculpting and etching the surface. These etched marks, like the stroke of a brush on canvas or a finger pressed into clay, leave a trace of the artist's hand and are undeniably linked to his or her process and the very nature of the material.
