Lives in Châteauneuf de Grasse and works in Biot, France
Born in Toul in 1988, Léo grew up with his father, a master glassmaker. Even as a child, he showed a particular interest in the versatile material of glass, and quickly learned all the techniques of hot and cold working.
In 2014, he became assistant to glass artist Antoine Pierini, with whom he honed his techniques and developed his artistic style. His work has been exhibited in various galleries, including Galerie Crescendo and the Centre du Verre Contemporain, and is also among those presented at every edition of the BIG Festival (Biot International Glass festival).
From the outset, his artistic work has been linked to a reflection on our planet, its evolution and man's imprint on nature.
His curiosity about cave paintings in prehistoric caves was his first source of inspiration, and the one that led me to work on the Terre & Verre series. Initially attracted by the graphic aspect of these ancestral works, he learned that these drawings were probably much more than decorative, but a means of perpetuating a memory. And it is this notion of testimony, of trace, that has been the real driving force behind his subsequent creations.
Man's trace on nature, and then more generally the trace left by nature itself, which, in a reverse manner, enables us to understand the geology and geography of a past and bygone era, but also to prove its infinite evolution. Indeed, our world as we know it is constantly evolving. Our seemingly unchanging mountains continue to rise, driven by erosion on the one hand, and the uplift of the earth's crust on the other.
These last two points inspired the Magma series. He assembled previously worked and coloured glass, which, when fired, gave life to a work of singular shapes and colors: a mountain rock covered with clear water, a snapshot of molten lava...
The new series, Peintures de Verre, is rooted in this general approach and is perhaps even its culmination. In these paintings, he attempts to condense the evolution of our landscapes, but also to capture their present-day beauty and that special moment of the new day, of the eternal cycle, when midnight blue turns to pink and then to cyan, and clouds stretch out like brush trails.
